Rural Crime on the Increase

Despite the national crime figures suggesting an overall decrease in crime rates, rural crime is on the increase.

Particularly vulnerable to crime and seen as easy pickings are farms and estates, where the risk-reward for the thieves is much in their favour.

Farm machinery thefts are up 5.5% on 2009 according NFU Mutual's claims figures with over £40m in machinery thefts alone.

So, the rural crime top 10 are:

  1. Quad Bikes
  2. Power Tools
  3. Land Rovers/4x4s
  4. Tractors
  5. Trailers
  6. Fuel
  7. Scrap Metal
  8. Lawnmwers and Garden Tools
  9. Horse Tack
  10. Livestock

Gloucestershire School Crime

The Gloucestershire Echo have released statistics this week provided under the Freedom of Information Act.  The statistics revealed that police Officers have been called out to schools on 491 occasions since April 2009.  Whilst the figure does not seem massivelyhigh, given the number of schools in Gloustershire, this figure could still be reduced by introducing better security measures.  The crimes range from rape at the worst case to minor public order ofences.

The bulk of the crimes were:

  • Theft - 159 cases
  • Criminal Damage - 102 cases

Sensible use of CCTV security systems either on a permanent or temporary basis has been  proven to reduce crime in and around schools.

Used in conjunction with a well planned awareness scheme, it can have even better results.

Keep Your Car Safe On The Drive

Thieves are particularly on the lookout for:
  • Signs that the car has a removable Sat Nav as they're often put in the glove box
  • Removable radios and CD's
  • Bags, briefcases or jackets
  • Paperwork for identity theft

Thieves will often break into houses just to get the keys to steal the car.

So please don't leave your keys on a windowsill or on a table just inside a door as this simply makes it too easy for them.

DIY Alarms

Criminals love a house without lights or alarms.  For that reason a home security system will definitely help in making a burglar think twice before breaking in. If you're worried about your house, a burglar alarm can be quite easy to install and Do-It-Yourself intruder alarm kits are less expensive, easy to fit and understand. However, beware of DIY intruder alarms which are very cheap, because they may not be that dependable.  In addition, you may not identify all the risks that a security professional would, so you could still be vulnerable to a determined thief.

Whillst there are fantastic deals out there on quality burglar alarms, don't skimp and purchase a cheap alarm, because your safety is more valuable.

It doesn't cost too much more to bring in a professional such as Falcon Security to install your alarm.

CCTV Installers

We have come across many CCTV installations where money has been wasted.  This is because the installed system has not been designed correctly and doesn't do the job it's needed to do.

This is generally due to:

  • Porr identification of the risk areas
  • Lack of documented design
  • Absence of operational procedures
  • Poor quality installation
  • Lack of operational testing
If installed correctly, CCTV can have a huge benefit, but before spending any money with CCTV installers, ensure they're properly accredited by  the National Security Inspectorate (NSI).
